PAs Practicing in Psychiatry on the Rise, Filling Critical Gap
The percentage of PAs working in psychiatry has nearly doubled from 1.1% (630) in 2013 to 2% (2,262) in 2021, newly published research in the BMC Human Resources for Health journal shows.
“This trend is encouraging, given the critical shortage of mental health providers nationwide,” said lead author Mirela Bruza-Augatis, Ph.D., MS, PA-C, a researcher at NCCPA.
The study, “Physician Assistants/Associates in Psychiatry: A Workforce Analysis,” analyzed NCCPA data, examining demographics and practice characteristics of PAs practicing in psychiatry compared to those in other specialties.
